Rachna T. Shroff, MD, addresses the impact of health disparities in the treatment outcomes of patients with cancer. Specifically discussing patients with biliary tract cancer, Dr Shroff focuses primarily on the barriers to access facing these patients, which includes lack of access to the specialists who treat biliary tract cancer, lack of access to important clinical trials studying new therapies, and lack of access to comprehensive biomarker testing.
To help alleviate the disparity in outcomes of patients on their cancer journey, Dr Shroff stresses the importance of having both access to and coverage for the expensive process of full biomarker testing upfront, to evaluate which targetable alterations the patient harbors and to find the most suitable treatment available to them.
