Amit Saxena, MD, highlights how treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus has rapidly improved in the past few years and how new medications have dramatically changed the quality of life of many patients.
He recalls a patient who was diagnosed with lupus in the 1980s and tried countless medications to help with her debilitating rash but did not see much improvement. However, when treated with newer targeted biologic medications, the patient saw her rashes melting away starting the day after her first infusion. Dr Saxena looks toward the future of systemic lupus erythematosus treatments and is hopeful about how "game-changing" these new treatments can be for patients.
