Jonathan Silverberg, MD, PhD, MPH, feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from outstanding mentors throughout his career in treating atopic dermatitis (AD). The one mentor who helped shape his philosophy and approach the most was Jon Hanifin, MD, for whom the Hanifin and Rajka diagnostic criteria for AD were named, Dr Silverberg shadowed Dr Hanifin during the last year of his residency at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.
Dr Hanifin helped him to see the need for chronic disease management and maintenance therapy, and to not feel failure when patients present a difficult challenge in treatment, but instead to "dig deep into the toolbox" and consider all options in the care for patients suffering from AD.
