Based on recent studies, salvage ablation represents a viable treatment option to select patients with locally recurrent disease. Its role is most supported by the literature in postradiation recurrences where the main alternative, radical prostatectomy, is associated with considerable morbidity. Both cryotherapy and HIFU have acceptable oncologic outcomes, however, HIFU appears to be associated with higher morbidity especially in the whole gland treatment setting. In the postprostatectomy population recent data is limited; however, in select patients, salvage ablation of local recurrences can be considered with additional studies needed.
