NICE states that when assessing for peripheral arterial disease in those with diabetes, a normal or raised ankle brachial pressure index alone does not allow for the exclusion of peripheral arterial disease. They highlight that people with diabetes may have a normal or raised index because of the presence of hardening of the arteries.
NICE also says that pulse oximetry should not be used for diagnosing peripheral arterial disease in those with diabetes given the lack of evidence on the use of pulse oximetry for this purpose.
