Conclusion
Diet is a useful tool in managing IBS symptoms. Increasing evidence shows that LFD and probiotics have favorable effects in improving IBS symptoms. However, robust studies need to clarify the long-term safety of restrictive dietary interventions, and in relation to probiotic administration the optimal strain, dose and duration. In addition, the patient's perspective and preferences should be considered, and a good relationship with a nutrition specialist is warranted for better results and limitation of potential harmful effects. Patients should be encouraged to follow at least the recommendations of first-line dietary advice.
