The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says most women (8 out of 10) experience some symptoms during the menopause. These typically last about 4 years after the last period, but in around 1 in 10 women symptoms continue for up to 12 years. The average age of menopause in the UK is 51. One in 100 women experience menopause before the age of 40 years - premature ovarian insufficiency.
