The pruritus associated with pediculosis is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, which may take four to six weeks to develop after the first exposure, with future exposures resulting in pruritus within one to two days. Intense pruritus leads to scratching, with subsequent excoriations and possible secondary cellulitis.
