Review Methodology

A literature search was conducted in May 2018 that covered the novel oral anticoagulant literature published since January 2016. Information was obtained from PubMed using the keywords 'oral anticoagulation', or 'novel or direct oral anticoagulants', or 'nonvitamin K antagonists', or 'vitamin K antagonists', or 'warfarin', and 'atrial fibrillation', and 'severe CKD', 'dialysis', 'left atrial apendage occlusion', respectively, in the title/abstract. A total of 395 articles were identified, of which 51 were considered relevant to the topic. These articles were studied, and the most significant or novel are referred to in the current review.
