Case Study: HIV and Strongyloides
A 20-year-old man from Vietnam is HIV-1 positive, with no known history of opportunistic infections, a viral load of 150,000 copies/mL, and CD4 count of 75 × 106 cells/µL. He was started on HAART. Two months later, he began to have abdominal pain and loss of appetite, with a 15-lb weight loss. Radiography showed dilated loops of small and large bowel. His CD4 count had increased to 125 × 106 cells/µL, and his viral load was undetectable. His stool was positive for Strongyloides stercoralis.
