In 2001 the North American Hair Research Society (NAHRS) sponsored a workshop on PCA.[11] A working classification was developed based on the predominant inflammatory infiltrate found on scalp biopsy. Differentiation of recognized clinical conditions, within each histological subgroup, could then be made based on the clinical features expressed ( Table 1 ). While a number of arguments may be invoked as to why this classification is not entirely satisfactory, it nevertheless offers a reasonable and pragmatic approach to the problem and therefore is adopted here to structure this review.
