Implications for Nursing Practice

The role of the RN in recognizing, managing recovery, and educating patients/families about concussions will continue to take on importance in light of the notable rise in concussion rates and as new evidence emerges about the dangers of premature return to activity. Children present unique challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of concussions in light of their developing brains. Nurses are often pivotal in overseeing multidisciplinary professionals, and in educating and collaborating with parents and families to individualize each child's treatment to promote the child's best possible outcome for a lifetime ahead.
