Children who develop severe and life-threatening varicella complications may require hospitalization in an intensive care unit (ICU). The following findings are indications for admission to the ICU:

  • Altered consciousness

  • Seizures

  • Difficulty walking

  • Respiratory distress

  • Cyanosis

  • Low oxygen saturation
