The following complications may occur:

  • Cellulitis

  • Suppuration

  • Systemic involvement

  • Internal jugular vein thrombosis

  • Septic embolic phenomena

  • Carotid artery rupture

  • Mediastinal abscess

  • Purulent pericarditis
