Answer

Local anesthesia (lidocaine 1-2% with epinephrine) is injected at the lateral canthus subcutaneously, taking care to point the needle away from the globe. Additional anesthetic may be supplemented during the procedure but is usually unnecessary. In patients on anticoagulants, this initial bolus is helpful.
