Many indications for mild, moderate, and profound therapeutic hypothermia are currently being experimentally and clinically evaluated. Preliminary data, prospective studies, and meta-analyses suggest the indications for targeted temperature management (TTM) may broaden considerably in the future. TTM may be considered for any patient with severe brain injury without evidence of hemorrhage or elevated risk of cerebral hemorrhage at the discretion of the treating practitioner. However, currently, no expert consensus or advisory panel supports the broad application of hypothermia outside its current indication for comatose patients after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) due to ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT).
