Infectious causes include the following:

  • Trichinosis
  • Cysticercosis ( Taenia solium)
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) [3]
  • Coxsackie A and B viruses
  • Influenza
  • Lyme disease
  • Staphylococcus aureus muscle infection (frequent cause of pyomyositis)
