Often, a ureteral stent must be placed after ureteroscopy in order to prevent obstruction from ureteral spasm and edema. Since a ureteral stent is often uncomfortable, many urologists eschew stent placement following ureteroscopy in selected patients. [81] Urologists may omit stent placement in patients who meet all the following criteria [44] :

  • No suspected ureteric injury during ureteroscopy
  • Absence of ureteral stricture or other anatomical impediments to stone fragment clearance
  • Normal contralateral kidney
  • No renal function impairment
  • No secondary ureteroscopy planned
