When is IVIG preferred over plasma exchange in the treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS)?

IVIG treatment is easier to implement and potentially safer than plasma exchange, and the use of IVIGs versus plasma exchange may be a choice of availability and convenience. [130, 135, 136]

Additionally, IVIG is the preferential treatment in hemodynamically unstable patients and in those unable to ambulate independently. [137, 138] Some evidence suggests that in select patients who do not respond initially to IVIG, a second dose may be beneficial. [139] However, this is not currently standard therapy and warrants further investigation.
