The postpartum period is the most vulnerable time for a woman to develop psychiatric illness with postpartum depression occurring in 10-15% of women in the general population. Postpartum depression develops most frequently in the first 4 months following delivery but can occur anytime in the first year. Postpartum depression is no different from depression that can occur at any other time in a woman's life. [2, 42] Women who have suffered 1 episode of major depression following childbirth have a risk of recurrence of about 25%. [43]
