Answer

Answer

Postmenopausal calcium/vitamin D supplementation appears to increase serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) levels and improve lipid profiles. When Schnatz et al evaluated the effect of increased levels of 25OHD3 from calcium/vitamin D supplementation on the lipid profiles of 600 postmenopausal women randomly selected from the Women’s Health Initiative Calcium/Vitamin D Trial, they found that daily supplementation with 1,000 mg of elemental calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D3 significantly increased concentrations of 25OHD3 and decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. [35] Moreover, women with higher concentrations of 25OHD3 had higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol but lower triglyceride levels. [35]
