The US incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) rose steadily from 1980-2001, but the rate subsequently leveled off at approximately 350 per 1 million population. [19] However, the percentage of patients older than 65 years has been the most rapidly growing segment of the ESRD population, having increased from 5% to 37% of this group. [19]
