Answer

According to recent NNIS surveys, enterococci remain in the top 3 most common pathogens that cause nosocomial infections. Enterococci frequently cause UTIs, bloodstream infections, and wound infections in hospitalized patients. Nosocomial enterococcal infections typically occur in very ill debilitated patients who have been exposed to broad-spectrum antibiotics. They are the third most common cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections in the United States. [16]
