How should opioids be used in the treatment of chronic pain?

  • Prescribe acetaminophen or NSAIDs.

  • Opioids may be used, but long-acting formulations are recommended in place of prn dosing.

    • Select formulation based on previous response, adverse effects, and comorbid conditions.
