Suicide ranks as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and young adults (15–24 years old). [1]  Globally, an estimated 700,000 people take their own lives annually. [2]  According to the CDC, there were 44,965 suicides in the United States in 2016. [1]

An alarming increase in suicides have been reported in the last decade. Rockett et al have reported that over the past decade, mortality rates for suicide, poisoning, and falls have substantially increased. Because of traffic safety measures, suicide has surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of injury mortality. [6] This phenomenon is even more compelling because, in many instances, suicides can be prevented. Therefore, clinicians must recognize the risk factors for suicide as a way of intervening in a self-destructive event and cycle.
