Which tests are performed emergently to differentiate transient ischemic attack (TIA) from other conditions?

It is important to rule out other causes, such as metabolic or drug-induced etiologies, which can present with symptoms similar to that of TIA. The following tests are considered on an emergency basis:

  • A fingerstick blood glucose for hypoglycemia

  • Complete blood count

  • Serum electrolyte levels

  • Coagulation studies

  • 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) with rhythm strip
