Preoperative anti-inflammatory treatment

  • Postoperative scarring increases the risk of failure of the trabeculectomy.

  • Topical corticosteroids started a few days before surgery are often sufficient.

  • Consider oral steroids or peribulbar injection of steroids for high-risk cases.

    • Uveitic glaucoma

    • Young patients

    • Pigmented races

    • Scarred conjunctiva

    • Neovascular glaucoma
