The oxygenation index (OI) greater than 40 in 3 of 5 postductal gas determinations obtained 30-60 minutes apart may be computed as follows (where MAP is mean airway pressure):

  • OI = (MAP x FiO2 x 100)/PaO2

  • PaO2 = 35-50 mm Hg for 2-12 hours
