At present, various new potential markers of iron status are being developed and experiments are under way, identifying each and every minute component that may be involved in the mobilization of iron throughout the body. One of these markers is an endogenous antimicrobial peptide, hepcidin. The possible central role of hepcidin in the pathogenesis of anemia of chronic disease is an interesting one that has been the subject of numerous publications. [4, 5, 6]

There are some newer agents that may aid in the treatment of anemia in chronic illness or chronic kidney disease. [32] Some of these have been approved and others are experimental.
