A sufficient amount of sleep favorably impacts the maintenance of fat-free mass during times of decreased energy intake. In contrast, insufficient sleep undermines the body's ability to limit expansion of fat mass. A healthy sleep pattern is therefore important to harness weight loss benefits from other interventions. [148] Seven to 8 hours of sleep are optimal. Shorter (< 6 h) or longer (>9 h) sleep duration is associated with increased total body weight. Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, if present, also helps in weight reduction.
