Why is exercise important in the treatment of obesity?

Since approximately 27% of the diet-induced weight loss is from loss of muscle, the addition of exercise to caloric restriction is important. Studies have shown that muscle mass loss is reduced to approximately 13% of the total weight loss when diet and exercise are combined. [140]

Exercise also increases metabolic activity and reduces body fat. Although most patients may be unable to sustain enough regular exercise to achieve weight loss, consistent, moderate exercise is important in maintaining weight and in improving overall cardiorespiratory fitness. [141] Shorter bouts of exercise of around 10 minutes are associated with better adherence and more weight loss than are longer bouts of exercise.
