For many patients, the HbA1c target should be less than 7%, with a premeal blood glucose level of 80–130 mg/dL. However, targets should be individualized.

Individuals with recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycemia, cardiovascular disease, advanced complications, substance abuse, or untreated mental illness may require higher targets, such as an HbA1c of less than 8% and preprandial glucose levels of 100-150 mg/dL. The 2011 American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) guidelines support the creation of individualized targets that consider these factors as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
