Internationally, rates of type 1 DM are increasing. In Europe, the Middle East, and Australia, rates of type 1 DM are increasing by 2-5% per year. [45] The prevalence of type 1 DM is highest in Scandinavia (ie, approximately 20% of the total number of people with DM) and lowest in China and Japan (ie, fewer than 1% of all people with diabetes). Some of these differences may relate to definitional issues and the completeness of reporting.
