Finally, postoperative ulnar neuropathies frequently give rise to lawsuits. Although such neuropathies appear to be most common after cardiac procedures, a Mayo Clinic study cited a rate of 0.5% even after noncardiac procedures. [190] Often, the neuropathy does not appear immediately after the operation, which suggests that the nerve trauma may occur in the postoperative period. Careful attention to protecting the ulnar nerve both during and after the procedure may reduce both the injury rate and the number of ensuing legal claims.
