A 5-step process should be performed when analyzing a neonatal EEG. The 5 steps consist of the following:

  1. Knowledge of the postconceptional age and topography of the infant's head

  2. Identification of artifacts in the EEG

  3. Identification of sleep and wake states

  4. Feature extraction

  5. Classification of the record as normal or abnormal and the clinical correlation provided to the clinician
